The finished cellar accommodates 168 bottles within a footprint measuring approximately 65½" wide by 45" deep, demonstrating how efficient planning can maximize both storage capacity and visual impact.
A Glass Wine Cellar Designed to Complement the Home
Rather than creating a separate wine room hidden away from the rest of the basement, the homeowners wanted the wine collection to become part of the entertaining experience.
Positioned beside a custom wet bar, the cellar was designed to feel cohesive with the surrounding millwork while maintaining its own identity as a striking design feature. Floor-to-ceiling frameless glass allows the collection to remain visible from throughout the recreation space, while integrated lighting transforms the cellar into an eye-catching focal point both day and night.

Choosing the Right Wine Storage System

Solving a Design Challenge: Radiant Floor Heating
Every custom project presents unique construction considerations.
In this home, the basement featured in-floor radiant heating beneath the future wine cellar location. Since floor heat can affect the efficiency of a climate-controlled enclosure, this required careful planning during the design phase.
To mitigate heat transfer into the cellar, we designed an insulated raised floor platform beneath the glass enclosure. This improves the efficiency of the cooling system while helping maintain consistent storage temperatures throughout the year.
Just as importantly, the solution became a design feature rather than a compromise.
The finished platform frames the glass enclosure beautifully, giving the cellar a sense of presence within the room. When we returned to photograph the completed project, both our team and the homeowner agreed that the raised platform looked entirely intentional within the overall design. More importantly, the cellar was cooling efficiently and performing exactly as intended.
Cooling a Glass Wine Cellar
One of the biggest technical differences between a traditional wine room and a glass wine cellar is the additional thermal load created by the glass.
Because glass transfers more heat than insulated walls, selecting the correct refrigeration system, and sizing it appropriately, is critical to long-term performance. Our team always produces a thermal load calculation for wine cellars with glass to determine the true cooling capacity requirement.
For this project, we specified a WhisperKOOL Slimline LS self-contained cooling system.
The cellar was intentionally designed with a header above the frameless glass enclosure, providing an interior wall surface for the Slimline LS to mount through. The unit exchanges air with the open recreation space immediately outside the cellar, making it an ideal application for this layout while eliminating the need to run refrigerant piping behind finished walls. The only utility connections required are a dedicated electrical connection and drain line.
The result is a cooling system that is:

- Efficiently sized to compensate for the thermal loss through the glass enclosure.
