A Contemporary Glass Wine Cellar Designed Around VINdustry Peg & Panel Kits

Most people who start researching glass wine cellars, or glass wine cabinets, are after the same thing. They want the wine on full show, framed by clean lines, with the glass itself all but disappearing around it. That's the real draw. Architectural presence in the room, and a collection that stays part of the space instead of shut out of sight. A freestanding glass cabinet handles that well enough for some collections. A custom glass cellar does more. You get more design flexibility, more storage, and a build meant to hold up for the long run.

This project is a good look at what that difference actually buys you.

It sits in a contemporary lower-level entertainment space, next to a wet bar, and it was designed to work with that bar while holding its own as an architectural feature. The minimalist look hides a fair amount of engineering: thought-through structure, carefully chosen materials, and a climate-controlled environment built to protect a collection that's still growing.

The cellar holds 168 bottles in a footprint of about 65½" wide by 45" deep. That's tight planning, and it shows how much you can fit without giving up the display.

Designed to Belong Beside the Bar

The homeowners didn't want the wine tucked away in a back room. They wanted it out where people gather.

So we set the cellar beside a custom wet bar and matched it to the surrounding millwork, while letting it keep its own identity. Floor-to-ceiling frameless glass keeps the collection visible from anywhere in the recreation space. Integrated lighting does the rest, day or night.

You end up with something that's furniture and architecture at once, and it keeps the wine at temperature the whole time.

Choosing the Storage System

Like a lot of clients, this one walked in picturing something else.

Then they saw our VINdustry Peg & Panel Kits in the showroom, in person, and that settled it. The floating bottles, the minimalist aluminum pegs, the panel system: it matched what they'd been imagining for the space.

The look wasn't the only reason, though. The VINdustry system is modular and precision-engineered, so we didn't have to design and fabricate every display panel from scratch. We started from that foundation and customized it for the project. Less fabrication time, an easier install, real value, and it still reads as fully custom, made for this room.

For the panel faceplates, they chose a custom Bodaq architectural vinyl finish. The texture ties into the cabinetry around it and adds a bit of depth and warmth without pulling focus from the wine.

Modular storage, in other words, doesn't have to look modular.

Cabinet or Cellar?

Plenty of people start out shopping for glass wine cabinets, and it makes sense. The glass-enclosed look is clean and contemporary.

For a bigger collection or a custom home, though, a cellar gives you more to work with. A cabinet locks you into its own dimensions and layout. A cellar doesn't. Capacity, display style, lighting, cooling, finishes, even a dedicated spot for special bottles: all of it bends to your collection and the room it lives in.

This project is the case in point. Instead of parking a standalone cabinet in the recreation room, we built a fully integrated feature that stores far more and became one of the room's anchor pieces.

Fitting More Bottles Without Hiding Them

A cellar has to do two things at once. Hold a lot, and show it off.

We laid this one out for efficient storage while keeping the collection readable from every angle through the frameless glass. Here's what went in:

Together they give the wall some movement, and they keep bottles easy to organize and reach. Everyday pours stay handy. The special stuff gets the spotlight it's owed.

The Radiant Floor Problem

Every custom job comes with its own puzzle. This one was under the floor.

The basement had in-floor radiant heating running right where the cellar was going. Floor heat works against a climate-controlled enclosure, so we had to plan around it early.

Our fix was an insulated raised floor platform under the glass. It cuts the heat coming up into the cellar, which makes the cooling system's job easier and holds temperatures steadier through the year.

And here's the part I like. The fix turned into a feature. The platform frames the glass and gives the cellar real presence in the room. When we came back to photograph it, both our team and the homeowner thought the raised platform looked like it had always been part of the plan. Better still, the cellar was cooling efficiently and doing exactly what it was built to do.


Beating Heat Loss in Glass Cellars 

Here's the big technical gap between a normal wine room and a glass one. The glass lets in more heat.

Glass moves more heat than an insulated wall, full stop. So picking the right refrigeration, and sizing it correctly, makes or breaks how the cellar performs over time. We always run a thermal load calculation on any cellar with glass, so we know the real cooling number we're solving for.

For this one, we specified a WhisperKOOL Slimline LS self-contained cooling system.

We built the cellar with a header above the frameless glass on purpose, which gave the Slimline LS an interior wall to mount through. The unit trades air with the open recreation space just outside the cellar, which is close to ideal here, and it means no refrigerant piping snaking behind finished walls. All it needs is a dedicated electrical connection and a drain line.

What that gets you:

  • Quiet enough for an entertainment space.

  • Sized to cover the heat lost through the glass enclosure.

  • Simple to install, since it's self-contained.

  • Easy to service down the road.

Cooling isn't the thing to figure out last. Every cellar carries a different thermal load depending on the glazing, the insulation, the room size, and what's around it. A designer who's done this before will size the system to protect what you've put into the collection.

What the Integrated LED Lighting Does

Lighting is usually what turns a wine cellar from a storage box into something you actually want to look at.

Instead of leaning on overhead lights, we ran integrated perimeter LEDs behind every Peg & Panel faceplate. That builds depth, catches the texture in the custom Bodaq finish, and plays up the way each bottle seems to float. By day it reads clean and modern. In the evening it's one of the first things you notice in the room.

How It Turned Out

The best part of any project is hearing how it lives once people start using it.

When we went back to shoot the finished install, the homeowner told us they were happy with how it looked and how it worked. It became what they'd pictured: an elegant architectural feature that plays off the bar next to it and still stands on its own as a focal point.

They were especially pleased with the insulated raised platform, and how naturally it fit in, saying it looked completely intentional rather than a workaround for the home's radiant heating.
